Originality is a key specification on CLASSIC.COM that reflects the conservation status of a vehicle. It is determined using a combination of AI and human expertise.
What is Originality?
At CLASSIC.COM, "Originality" is a key specification that reflects the conservation status of a vehicle. This designation is determined by our curation team using a combination of advanced AI and human expertise. To ensure accurate categorization, we rely on comprehensive vehicle descriptions and detailed image galleries provided by sellers.
Why Does Originality Matter?
Originality helps buyers and sellers better understand the historical integrity of a vehicle. It allows us to generate more precise comparable sales data and enhances the functionality of our Garage and other features on our platform.
Categories of Originality
We categorize vehicles into four distinct originality levels:
1. Original
Vehicles categorized as "Original" are close to their factory specifications, regardless of condition. These vehicles are considered "Highly Original" even if they have minor, removable modifications or replacement of wearable parts, such as:
- Aftermarket wheels
- Exhaust systems
- Accessories (e.g., cargo or roof racks)
- Aftermarket stereos
2. Modified
"Modified" vehicles feature multiple, removable changes that enhance or alter their original design. These modifications often include:
- Aftermarket bumpers or body trim
- Suspension upgrades
- Added performance equipment (e.g., turbos, superchargers)
- Transmission swaps
- Body wraps
Vehicles in this category generally retain the potential to be returned to their original factory specifications.
3. Custom
"Custom" vehicles have undergone significant modifications or restorations, which often include:
- Non-period-correct engine swaps
- Engines from different manufacturers
- Major body customizations or conversions
Unlike "Modified" vehicles, Custom cars are typically not easily reverted to their original factory state.
4. Project
"Project" vehicles are those that require meaningful repairs to become roadworthy. These vehicles may be:
- Partially operable
- Inoperable
- Disassembled
- Incomplete
Key Considerations
Restorations and Originality
Restored vehicles are classified as either "Original" or "Modified" depending on the type and extent of the restoration work. For example:
- A restoration that maintains factory specifications will likely be categorized as "Original."
- A restoration involving aftermarket upgrades may place the vehicle in the "Modified" or “Custom” category.
Originality vs. Condition
It is important to note that originality is distinct from condition. This classification is not a measure of concours quality or cosmetic perfection but rather a reflection of the vehicle’s conservation status. This ensures accurate comparisons in our sales data and other platform features.
"Unable to Determine"
In some cases, we are not able to determine Originality because the information provided by the Seller is not complete, states that the car has been sitting for more than a decade, or states that they haven't tried to start it. This most often applies to Racecars or Replicas/Kit cars, but can be seen on some other listings.
Tips for Ensuring Accurate Categorization
To help our curation team correctly classify your vehicle’s originality, follow these best practices:
- Provide a Thorough Description: Include detailed information about your vehicle’s history, modifications, and any restoration work.
- Upload a Comprehensive Image Gallery: Showcase high-quality images of your vehicle from multiple angles, including close-ups of key details.
By providing complete and accurate information, you’ll help us showcase your vehicle to potential buyers in the best possible light.
